Rafael Serna Treviño was born in Monterrey, Mexico on January 1, 1930. He completed his professional studies at Universidad de Nuevo Leon, obtaining the bachelor's degree in civil engineering and bachelor of mathematics, the latter was given in honorable mention considering that it was the first title issued by our School. Later in 1969, he studied a master’s degree in Economic Statistics at the Centro Interamericano de Enseñanza Estadistica, Economica y Social (CIEENES), in Santiago de Chile. He also carried out specialization studies in Mathematics during 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1963 in the School of Sciences of U.N.A.M.
His long teaching career started in 1950 in the School of Civil Engineering, but he also taught at the High School No. 1, the Normal Superior del Estado, School of Economics, School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and in School of Physics and Mathematics of U.A.N.L.
Serna Treviño worked there as a teacher of the following subjects: Algebra, Differential and Integral Calculus, Geometry and Trigonometry, Mathematical Analysis, Differential Geometry, Vector Analysis, Complex Variables, Topology, Statistics, Hydraulics, Kinematics and Analytical Mechanics.
Serna Treviño held various administrative positions during his long career: he was dean of School of Physics and Mathematics from 1958 to 1967 as well as in 1971, 1972, and 1978. He was also Coordinator of High School No. 1 from 1954 to 1959, head of the Department of Statistics in the UANL from 1961 to 1964 and Principal of some high schools in the Universidad Regiomontana from 1967 to 1972.
Serna was a pioneer and founder of the Union of Workers of the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon and the School of Physics and Mathematics as well as member of University Senate for 25 years (1955-1980).
He is also co-author of the Analytic Geometry textbook used at the high schools of the Universidad de Nuevo Leon from 1954 to 1967. In addition to this, Serna is emeritus professor of the UANL.
